Factors About Scholarships for Students

College Scholarships - 6 Facts You Didn't Know About Scholarships for Students

Many financial experts believe that the next great finance bubble is in the secondary education sector. Costs to attend college, both at public and private universities, both at 2 year and 4 year schools, both at non-profit and for profit colleges, are skyrocketing at a rate well above wage inflation. With this bubble showing no signs of popping, parents can expect the costs of their children's education to continue to rise for the foreseeable future. As such, the opportunity to obtain scholarships has never been more important.

Getting scholarships can be critical to a student's future well being as scholarships not only save money in the present, but also prevent funds from being needed via student loans, which saddle students with debt for a large portion of their lives.

Some parents and students may not think that scholarships are too hard to obtain or that they have accomplished enough to earn a scholarship. This probably is not the case. Here are six ways to obtain scholarships that the reader may not be aware of:

1) Every year, thousands of scholarships go unclaimed for the reason that nobody applies because their existence is not advertised. There are examples at nearly every university. Students should visit their financial aid office and pester the attendant to see what scholarships are available.

2) Building on the previous example, there are numerous scholarships available for smaller amounts. Many students think that only scholarships in the thousands are worth going after. But who would not take $100 of free money if it were available? Not only does every little bit help, but these scholarships can also be stacked and combined to pay for a greater percentage of tuition as a whole.

3) Social media is a great tool for finding national scholarships. Users would be surprised as to the number of options that are available via a simple Twitter or Facebook search of the word "scholarship." Many of these scholarships are not posted elsewhere.

4) There are some strange scholarship options available. Most people are not aware groups like Tall Clubs International offer very specific scholarships (in this case, for tall people). Everybody is weird and different in some way. Students should focus on those more unique aspects of their lives and see if any clubs or organizations that value people with those aspects or interests are offering scholarships. Odds are that they do.

5) Grants are not scholarships...but they provide the same benefits. Scholarships are based around some aspect of accomplishment, or potential for future accomplishment. People who offer the scholarship want to be associated with the student's future success. Grants are essentially free money that is available based upon one's background. For example, many people with Native American heritage are eligible for grants.

6) Many businesses offer huge numbers of small value scholarships. Discover Card is one of the highest profile examples of this. Like #2, these can be combined with other scholarships and students can find a large amount of their school paid for via a handful of different sources.

The most important thing to realize is that you have to ask for them! The only way to ensure that you will pay for your own school is to never apply for a scholarship.

Engineering Scholarships

Engineering Scholarships For Future Engineers

An engineering degree is quite expensive and in these days, would be a foolish thing to attempt to accomplish if you do not have enough money in the bank or if you do not have a scholarship to back your funds. Good thing though, that there are many private organizations who are more than willing to lend a financial hand to students who want to obtain an engineering degree and pursue a career in the engineering industry.

The University of Maine Microelectronics Scholarship Consortium is one of the most sought out college scholarships when it comes to engineering courses, particularly in the microelectronics/semiconductor industry and majoring in either engineering or science.

This scholarship is only open, however, to students who are to attend the University of Maine and must show potential to excel in such fields. The program is awarded based on academic excellence as well as merit in related fields and work experience..

For people who are interested in gaining a college scholarship or college tuition grant in the area of structural or civil engineering, the Wire Reinforcement Institute (WRI) Education Foundation offers scholarships and other assistance programs in the said fields. Unlike other scholarships and grants, the funds will not be delivered to the student but rather to the college or university where the recipient is attending.

You can also try to look for scholarships, college tuition grants, and other forms of financial aid by checking out various engineering organizations. Engineering groups like the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Institute of Industrial Engineers, and the National Society of Professional Engineers have been lending a hand to help promising engineering students obtain their college degrees and help in building a better future for everyone.

Nursing Scholarships For Women

Grants and Scholarships For Nursing Students

Going into a nursing program to pursue nursing as a career is very beneficial. You can expect to not only obtain a valuable career but also have the money to pay for your education. There is currently a tremendous shortage of nurses all across the country and unfortunately it is only expected to get worse.

To encourage people to pursue the field of nursing there are numerous federal, state and private funds available in the form of grants and scholarships to help people fund a nursing education. What's great is that grants and scholarships do not have to be repaid so it's basically free money to become a nurse!

There are many grants and scholarships available to cover the cost of an education for a nursing school program from the federal government. No matter if you are seeking a two year associates degree or you have chosen to complete a four year degree there is money available. In an effort to create more qualified nurses to deal with the vast nursing shortage the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has created a variety of grants and scholarships that are specifically for nursing students.

Many of these scholarships and grants supplement the Federal Pell and the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant. One of the main federal scholarship and grant programs for nursing students includes the Nursing Scholarship Program which provides funds for college with no repayment under the stipulation that the student agrees to work as a full time nurse in an underserved area. This particular program also provides assistance with living expenses. On a federal level there is a vast amount of money available to assist with paying for nursing school.

Likewise, state governments are also assisting by providing their own supplemental aid for the nursing school programs. With the combination of both federal and state aid many nursing students can afford school. Most of the state grants and scholarships do come with a promise made by the receiver of an award to work in the state for a certain period of time. If you are willing to do this than lots of state money could be available to pay for not only tuition and fees but living expenses and nursing supplies for school as well.

For those needing additional money for school there are private and professional organizations that offer scholarships. Some of these scholarships may be targeted towards particular groups such as certain ethnic or racial groups, men or women returning to school to become a nurse or for those students of a particular age.

In addition, many graduate nursing students can obtain applications for scholarships from professional nursing organizations that will offer money to a student who is willing to complete a graduate degree for a particular specialty such as cancer or acute care.

Apply Online For Scholarships

Applying for Scholarships for Online Art Degrees

Making the decision to apply for an online art degree is a big step, and those that are looking for scholarships that will financially assist them in achieving their goal will be happy to know that there are many that are available to prospective students at the moment. Knowledge is power, in terms of scholarships, and so it is always a good idea to get to know as much as possible about the options that are available.

Organizations, Groups and Individuals that Offer Scholarships

A student looking to further their prospects through an online art degree should widen their options, when it comes to a scholarship, and this includes approaching groups, organizations and individuals who have been known to offer financial support to these students in the past. These include:

  •  Charity Foundations
  •  Professional Organizations
  •  The Student's Own Employer
  •  Schools, University Departments and Colleges
  •  Art Competitions and Festivals

Getting Organized

Applying for scholarships can be time-consuming, and students need to gather as much information about each one as possible in order to complete the process in a timely manner. Recording information on a sheet, which will include the names of the organization and scholarship being offered, as well as the deadline for the applications, will assist students in being able to organize themselves and the information to make this process more efficient and a lot less confusing. Students also need to ensure that they apply for scholarships that they are eligible for; otherwise they might end up wasting valuable time that could be spent searching for those that they had a good chance of getting.

Apply To Succeed

While applying for a scholarship might be a daunting process, students simply need to get organized in order to have a good chance at succeeding. There are other ways to ensure that you get the scholarship you're aiming for and these include:

Preparing For The Application Well Ahead Of Time

Students who are going to apply for a scholarship will need to meet with certain criteria in order to achieve success. Those that are going to be picking the students who will receive the scholarships often focus on a few, specific attributes that they feel are important to the success of a student, and this is what an individual needs to aim for when they apply. When a student begins these preparations well ahead of the time, they can find out a bit more about what the judges require from them, and this means that they can ensure they meet with every requirement. Applying early is also important; this will show the judges just how dedicated a student is to getting that scholarship.

Have Realistic Expectations

If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is; students will need to keep this in mind when tracking down a scholarship opportunity. Students should not pay for scholarships, and anyone promising this in return for cash is not going to make good on the promise. It is also important to remember that many scholarships will only pay for a portion of your fees; you might have to fill in the gaps with a part-time job.
